Where we work with your ABILITIES,
NOT your DISABILITIES.
handiCAPABLE Guide Service, Inc. has served several
individuals with developmental delays and mobility difficulties
throughout the southeast. We are proud to highlight a few of these ...
- Demostrated our capabilities at the Disabled Organized Outdoor
Recreation Symposium Conference (D.O.O.R.S.) at the Alabama Special
Camp
for Children and Adults (Easter Seals Camp ASCCA).
- Contributed our talents to the Shepard Center's, Atlanta GA,
Adventure Skills Workshop using our wheelchair accessible boat
providing fishing expeditions and adaptive fishing classes to spinal
cord injured individuals and wheelchair users, including a C4 quad
using a prototype chin-operated fishing rod and reel.
- A Lexington, KY resident who had essentially not left his house
for the past few years due to his second stroke. In less than 1 hour,
our staff had him casting and "reeling in the big ones" one-handed, by
himself.
- An 18 year old Princeton, KY resident with birth defects loved
to fish and had never missed a fishing show on TV. Although he fished,
he had never cast by himself. We had him casting on his own in just
minutes.
- Traveled to the Hardinsburg, Ky MDA Camp for several of "Jerry's
Kids" to boat and fish. Our staff lectured at the KATSN Conference
(Kentucky Assistive Technologies Services Network) in Lexington, Ky on
recreational opportunities for mobility-challengd individuals.
- Traveled to Scottsburg, for New Hope Services of Southern
Indiana, providing fishing and boating for several of South Indiana's
high school children with special needs.
- Conducted serniars and assisted in the annual wheelchair games
at the St. Louis VA hospital at Jefferson's Barracks Spinal Cord Unit.
- For a Paducah, KY resident's 81st birthday, he took a boat ride
with us. He was paralyzed on his right side from a stroke 8 years
earlier. While boating, he decided to "help us field test" a fishing
pole for paralyzed people. After catching about 30 blue gill, said, "It
works fine" Before going out his wife had told us, "He's too proud,
he'll never try to fish!"
- Provided seminars and hands-on demonstrations to over 1200 Boy
Scouts, Cub Scouts, Leaders, and parents at the Shawnee Trails Council,
B.S.A. for their "Challenge '97" Fall Camporee. In addition, we
provided information on the leading causes of disabilities, focusing on
spinal cord injuries, and it's ties to gangs, violence, drugs, and
education.
- Held our first, of probably many campouts during fall
2000. This pilot project was enjoyed by fourteen of our area's
disabled community. Despite the rain on Saturday and Saturday
night, "We had a BLAST !!!!"
Disabilities are like personalities, each
is unique.
We make no promises, other than working as a team to
try to help in your recreation and or rehabilitation through
adaptations to overcome the barriers placed before you so that with our
combined efforts you can enjoy the great natural resources of the
beautiful outdoors.
