handiCAPABLE Guide Service's Beginnings
handiCAPABLE Guide Service, Inc. was born in 1991 from a dream of
Marcus
Gough, a 16 year old boy with terminal Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy,
and Noel Dillard, a tournament fisherman and licensed guide,
who
saw the need to help the disabled and developmentally delayed
children
and adults enjoy their lives. handiCAPABLE received its 501(c)(3)
public
charity status in recreational rehabilitation from the IRS in September
1994.
Our focus has been fishing with our 21' Southern Skimmer boat with
its
drop-down bow allowing clients to "wheel" onto the boat and
lock-down.
The Southern Skimmer can easily be trailered to a summer camp,
tournament,
or convention to be utilized to its fullest by all children and/or
adults
who desire to enjoy their lives to the utmost.
Over the past 8 years, we have been developing adaptive equipment
for the
myriad of disabilities there are. Two of our adaptations are widely
used.
One adaptation is for stroke victims or amputees and the other for
C5-C6
clients The adaptation for the amputee or stroke victim is a one-handed
pole apparatus; the C5-C6 apparatus is an adaptive reel for persons
with
paralysis.
As DONATIONS come available, we are progressing on a PROTOTYPE
CHIN-OPERATED
FISHING POLE. We plan to have this wonderful adaptive device
fully
operational during late 2001.
handiCAPABLE Guide Service has given actual hands-on demonstrations,
training,
excursions, and/or modified client's existing equipment to over
7,000
people in eight area states since 1995.
Through the internet, we have assisted multitudes in building
recreational
adaptive devices through e-mails, phone consultations, and
visits.
Persons in NEARLY EVERY STATE IN THE USA and in OVER ELEVEN
COUNTRIES
WORLDWIDE.
Donations from individuals and businesses primarily
support this
organization. But, with an entirely volunteer staff,
donations
can be placed directly toward the essentials of insurance, boat
payments, utilities, repairs, boat operational costs, service
expansions,
etc.
